Course Description
Image Analysis and Understanding is a one semester graduate course
for the interdisciplinary scientific graduate program
Language Communication and
Cognitive Science at University of Zagreb.
Instructor
Image Analysis and Understanding graduate course is taught by
Professor Sven Loncaric.
Syllabus
The problem of analyzing the contents of an image, i.e. scene is one of the most difficult
problems in intelligence systems area. The aim of this course is to introduce students to
this multidisciplinary area where successful interpretation of scenes by means of intelligent
systems requires, apart from technical knowledge, knowledge of cognitive science as well.
The course will provide a short introduction into digital image processing including topics
such as image presentation, two-dimensional linear systems, image improvement,
image restoration and projection based reconstruction. The basic elements of image analysis
will be introduced in chapters on feature extraction, segmentation, and labelling of image
regions, shape description and representation. Advanced techniques such as artificial neural
networks and expert systems will be discussed. The course is designed as a combination of
traditional lectures and analysis of journal papers related to specific issues.
